KUSHNER IN MIDDLE EAST FOR PEACE TALKS
By ANNIE KARNI - August 22, 2017 - While everyone was busy gazing into the solar eclipse on Monday, White House adviser Jared Kushner quietly snuck away to the Middle East for a trip that will take him to the Persian Gulf and Israel.
Accompanying Kushner on Monday in the Gulf states were deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, and Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt, a White House official said.
More than 10 days ago, while the president was escalating a potential nuclear conflict with North Korea during his working vacation, the White House announced that Kushner, Powell and Greenblatt were planning to make another trip to the Middle East. No specific date, however, was announced at that time.
But a White House aide and an outside adviser familiar with the trip plans said Kushner departed on Sunday and is set to arrive in Israel Wednesday night for meetings on Thursday. The U.S. delegation was meeting with leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the days before.

NETANYAHU MEETS KUSHNER AS PART OF US PEACE PUSH
PM says peace is 'within our reach,' while Trump's son-in-law says US president 'very committed' to brokering a deal
By Alexander Fulbright - August 24, 2017 - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with senior White House adviser Jared Kushner on Thursday as part of a US bid to find ways to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Speaking alongside Kushner before the start of their meeting at IDF Headquarters in the Kirya compound in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said he believed peace was “within our reach.” “We have a lot of things to talk about. How to advance peace, stability and security in our region - prosperity too - and I think all of them are within our reach,” he said.
“So I am happy to see you and the effort you’re leading on behalf of the [US] President [Donald Trump] with Jason [Greenblatt] and other members of your team,” the prime minister said. “I think this is a sign of the great alliance between us and the great goals that guide us.” Kushner told Netanyahu that Trump is “very committed” to help broker a peace deal and thanked the prime minister for working with the White House toward that goal. “The president is very committed to achieving a solution here that will be able to bring prosperity and peace to all people in this area,” he said. “We really appreciate the commitment of the prime minister and his team to engaging very thoughtfully and and respectfully in the way that the president has asked him to do so.” Kushner also said “the relationship between Israel and America is stronger than ever and we really thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for his leadership and his partnership.”

The delegation arrived in Israel after several meetings with other leaders around the Middle East on the topic, including in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. No breakthroughs are expected.
Amman said in a statement that King Abdullah II, Kushner and Greenblatt stressed the need to start “serious and effective peace negotiations” on the “basis of the two-state solution,” during a meeting Tuesday.
Abbas reportedly told Israeli left-wing politicians recently that despite more than 20 meetings with US officials he was still unclear what Trump’s strategy was. “I don’t even know how they are dealing with us, because his entire administration is in chaos,” Abbas told a delegation of dovish Israeli lawmakers visiting Ramallah.[...] Omar al-Ghoul, a Palestinian political analyst, said there was little optimism from the Palestinian leadership. “The level of optimism from the Palestinian leadership and people towards the Trump administration is zero,” he said.
“There is not a glimmer of hope the administration will change its politics and positions.” Despite the frustration expressed by Palestinian leaders, a White House official told The Times of Israel earlier this month that Trump believes an “opportunity” has opened up to advance his peace initiative. “He believes that the restoration of calm and the stabilized situation in Jerusalem after the recent crisis on the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif has created an opportunity to continue discussions and the pursuit of peace that began early in his administration,” the official said. Recently, off-the-record remarks by Kushner - made to a casual gathering of congressional interns - were leaked to the media in which he said there may not be a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Times of Israel staff and AFP contributed to this report.

JORDAN KING TO US DELEGATION: TWO STATES THE ONLY SOLUTION TO CONFLICT
King Abdullah II stresses to the Jared Kushner-led team that negotiations need to be based on the traditional end goal

By Eric Cortellessa - August 23, 2017 - WASHINGTON — King Abdullah II of Jordan on Tuesday told a US peacemaking delegation the two-state solution is the only way to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ahead of meetings later this week between the US officials and Israeli and Palestinian leaders. During a Tuesday meeting with Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, Special Envoy for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, and Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategy Dina Powell, Jordan’s king said any attempt to renew negotiations must be based on an end goal of two states, according to a readout provided by the Jordanian Royal Court.
Image:Palestinian-Israeli peace process and re-launch serious and effective negotiations between the two sides based on the two-state solution, which is the only way to end the conflict,” the statement said. The meeting in Amman “focused on efforts to push forward the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and re-launch serious and effective negotiations between the two sides based on the two-state solution, which is the only way to end the conflict,” the statement said.
Those discussions came two days before the Kushner-led team was scheduled to meet separately with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday in Jerusalem and Ramallah.
The current US administration has not explicitly backed the two-state formula.
The Palestinians were demanding the US explicitly express its backing of the two-state solution before talks may resume.
Jibril Rajoub, a senior member of Abbas’s Fatah party, said Wednesday they would be demanding a clear commitment from Kushner and Greenblatt to an independent Palestinian state.

TURKEY, JORDAN CALL FOR 'SERIOUS' ISRAEL-PALESTINIAN PEACE TALKS
Leaders call for resumption of negotiations ‘based on international resolutions’ and a ‘precise timetable’

BY AFP August 21, 2017 - AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday called for new “serious and effective” peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, the royal palace said. Meeting in Amman, they urged “the resumption of serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel to end the conflict on the basis of a two-state solution to assure an independent Palestinian state with June 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as capital. Talks between Israel and the Palestinians have been at a standstill since the failure of US mediation in the spring of 2014. “New peace negotiations must take place according to a precise timetable and be based on international resolutions,” Erdogan and Abdullah said. They also expressed their “unequivocal rejection of any attempt to change the legal and historical situation in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and any unilateral Israeli action threatening the identity of East Jerusalem.”

FULL TEXT: PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD ABBAS' ADDRESS TO UN ASSEMBLY
Abbas tells world leaders Israel continues to obstruct peace efforts, warns of an approaching one-state reality and of a Palestinian Authority 'without any authority'
Haaretz | Sep 20, 2017 - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addresses the 72nd United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York on September 20, 2017. Credit: SHANNON STAPLETON/REUTERS
The full transcript of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the UN General Assembly: Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, twenty-four years have passed since the signing of the Oslo Accords, an interim agreement that set a five-year period for bringing an end to the Israeli occupation, granting hope to the Palestinian people that they would soon achieve independence within their state and achieve peace between Palestinians and Israelis. What is left of this hope today? We recognized the state of Israel on the 1967 borders. But Israel’s continuous refusal to recognize these borders has put into question the mutual recognition we signed in Oslo in 1993.
Since my speech before your august Assembly last year, when I appealed for 2017 to be the year for ending the Israeli occupation of the territory of the state of Palestine, the Israeli government has relentlessly pursued its settlement campaign on our land, in contravention of all international conventions and the relevant resolutions on the question of Palestine. It has persisted with its flagrant disregard for the two-state solution, resorting to delay policies and tactics and devising pretexts to evade its responsibility to end its occupation of the territory of the state of Palestine
Instead of addressing the underlying issues and resolving the root causes of the conflict, it has tried to misdirect international attention to the secondary issues actually caused by its colonial policies. While we call – just as the international community continues to call – for an end of the Israeli occupation of the territory of our state, it incites and makes false accusations, pretends there is no Palestinian partner, and imposes unreasonable, obstructive conditions. Israel is well aware, as you all are, that its occupation breeds incitement and violence, and this Israeli military occupation of our land has now lasted for over half a century. PRESIDENT TRUMP, CAST OUT THE ANTI-SEMITES

Op-ed: 11 former White House Jewish liaisons for Obama, Bush, Clinton and Reagan issue open letter to US president, pleading for 'moral leadership to respond to the rise of hatred in the nation we love'
By Matt Nosanchuk et al. |August 19, 2017 - JTA — As Jewish liaisons to four different presidents, we had the responsibility inside the White House to give voice to the perspectives and priorities of the American Jewish community. While our community may not be unified in matters of policy and politics, our spiritual practice, cultural traditions and history have instilled in American Jews a shared commitment to protecting those targeted by bigots, racists and others spewing hate and division.
The presidents we served repeatedly used their bully pulpit to condemn hatred and bigotry when it appeared, whether in America or overseas. A video of President Ronald Reagan’s speech at the 1981 NAACP Convention following the lynching of an African-American man in Alabama has gone viral in recent days. President Bill Clinton led the nation’s mourning following the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, and we all vividly recall President George W. Bush’s eloquent remarks standing on the rubble of the World Trade Center in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and President Barack Obama’s eulogy and rendition of “Amazing Grace” following the murder of nine African-American worshipers at a historically African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.
President Donald Trump, in his reaction to the violence in Charlottesville and to other examples of anti-Semitism, shows that he neither understands his responsibilities nor the nature of the ancient hatred of anti-Semitism and other forms of hate. His equivocation and unwillingness to speak clearly, without restraint, against blatant examples of racism, anti-Semitism and related manifestations of hate, as well as his refusal to lay blame for violence, are anathema to the best traditions of his office and to the examples set by the presidents we served. And in his failure, he exposes not just Jews but all Americans to greater danger. Cont'd http://www.timesofisrael.com/president-trump-cast-out-the-anti-semites

OUTSIDE JERUSALEM'S OLD CITY, A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME FIND OF ANCIENT GREEK INSCRIPTION
During a salvage excavation ahead of telephone cable infrastructure placement, archaeologists uncover a rare intact 1,500-year-old mosaic from the dawn of the Christian empire
BY AMANDA BORSCHEL-DAN August 23, 2017 - An extremely rare ancient early Christian Greek inscription has been discovered about a kilometer north of Jerusalem’s Old City. The once-in-a-lifetime dream archaeological find was discovered by chance during infrastructure work for a phone cable.
The intact 1,500-year-old mosaic was uncovered in the flooring of what is thought to have been a pilgrim hostel during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian. Israel Antiquities Authority director of excavation David Gellman was supervising the salvage dig ahead of the placement of Partner communications cable infrastructure outside American Consulate buildings in East Jerusalem. Gellman called the find “extremely exciting,” saying that “it’s not every day that one finds an inscription — a ‘direct letter’ from someone — from 1,500 years ago.” The black-lettered mosaic inscription was discovered on a white tile floor during the last day of salvage work.
An ancient Greek inscription mentioning the Byzantine emperor Justinian was found at the Jerusalem Old City Damascus Gate, August 2017 (Assaf Peretz, Israel Antiquities Authority) [...] Gellman, who has spent the past four years working on digs in Jerusalem, said with one more day left to his excavation permit, he had been unsure of any remarkable finds from the dig. The team was excavating an area approximately one meter below street level. “The excavation in a relatively small area exposed ancient remains that were severely damaged by infrastructure groundwork over the last few decades. We were about to close the excavation when all of a sudden, a corner of the mosaic inscription peeked out between the pipes and cables,” he said. https://youtu.be/z7wws-nwu20

THE JEWISH TEMPLE - WILL IT BE REBUILT?
A model of Herod's TempleAmong the evangelical and fundamental elements of modern Christianity, there seems to be a strange infatuation with anything that is considered 'Jewish'. There is presently a strong emphasis being placed upon the Jewish Torah, Jewish traditions, Jewish history, Jewish prayer shawls, Jewish symbols, Jewish songs, Jewish rights, Jewish land and the Jewish people. For the last forty years in our churches there has been taking place a major shift from a Christ-centered to a man-centered theology. In no area of theological thought is this shift more evident than in eschatology (the doctrine of last things), generally known as prophecy. Surprisingly, the paramount object of most prophetic teaching is centered on one people known as the Jews. Where once ecclesiology (the doctrine of the church) and soteriology (the
doctrine of salvation) were preached with power and spiritual authority, has now given way to a message of Judaistic pre-eminence. There are ministries that are wholly devoted to promoting the Jewish cause in Palestine in total disregard to the rights and welfare of the other occupants of the land. Currently, due to the influence of the secular news media, the 'Christian' pulpit has taken sides in the Middle East conflict by closing their eyes to the Biblical facts of history and prophecy.
RELIGIOUS FETISHISM
The area in the city of Jerusalem known as the "Wailing Wall" has now become a holy shrine to many misguided American Christians. One ministry is asking that people send their prayer requests to them so that they may in turn take them to be inserted into the crevices of the Wailing Wall. This amounts to nothing less than religious fetishism. The Wailing Wall was once a part of the greater area of Herod's temple that was destroyed in A.D. 70 by the Romans. Jesus Himself predicted the destruction of that old temple and the perverted religious order that it represented. Over six hundred years before the earthly ministry of Jesus, during the days of Jeremiah, the Lord rebuked the people of Judah for justifying their wicked ways by using their devotion to the physical temple as a religious covering.

MK GLICK SLAMS ONE-DAY "TRIAL" OF KNESSET MEMBERS VISITING TEMPLE MOUNT
By Abra Forman - August 27, 2017 - Who may ascend the mountain of Hashem? Who may stand in His holy place?” Psalms 24:3 (The Israel Bible™)
For the first time in nearly two years, Knesset members will be allowed to ascend to the Temple Mount – but only for one day, Israeli media reported last week.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu originally instated the ban against lawmakers going to the controversial site in October of 2015, when Israel was caught in a wave of terror ostensibly motivated by Arab incitement over imagined Jewish control of the Temple Mount.
MK Yehudah Glick. (Knesset) - Originally, a “pilot” week of MK visits to the Mount was planned for the end of July, but it was cancelled in the aftermath of a terror attack near the Temple Mount which left two Israeli policemen dead. This week, in light of “improved” security in the compound, said the Prime Minister’s Office last week, a one-day trial, held on Tuesday, will see both Arab and Jewish MKs permitted on the Temple Mount. But MK Yehudah Glick (Likud), an outspoken Temple Mount rights activist, criticized the move, saying that he did not “intend to be a guinea pig for the prime minister’s tests.” https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/93823/mk-glick-slams-one-day-trial-knesset-members-visiting-temple-mount

ISRAEL TO HOST FIRST-EVER CHRISTIAN MEDIA SUMMIT IN JERUSALEM
By JNS - August 24, 2017 - “From Tzion, perfect in beauty, Hashem appeared.” Psalms 50:2 (The Israel Bible™)
Around 70 Christian media outlets are scheduled to convene in Jerusalem this fall for a first-of-its-kind Christian media summit.
The four-day event - sponsored by Israel’s Government Press Office (GPO), Foreign Ministry and Jerusalem Affairs Ministry - will see some 140 Christian media associates visit the Jewish state’s capital in mid-October. The media summit will facilitate tours for participants, including a visit to Gush Etzion—Israel’s largest bloc of communities in Judea and Samaria. The Christian media professionals will also visit Bethlehem and Jerusalem’s Friends of Zion Museum, and will participate in conference sessions on topics related to news coverage of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and other senior officials are expected to meet with the Christian media representatives during their visit to the Jewish state. “We thought that the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem would be a good opportunity to hold such a conference,” Nitzan Chen, director of the GPO, told Haaretz. “We hope these journalists will become good ambassadors for Israel and if this conference succeeds, the idea is to hold it every year or two,” he added. The Christian journalists were invited to Israel following government consultations with the National Religious Broadcasters, a non-partisan, international association of Christian communicators with more than 1,100 member organizations.

DEARBORN MUSLIMS IN UPROAR OVER CHRISTIAN PROSELYTIZING - POLICE CHIEF ADMITS IT
"APPEARS TO BE LEGAL"
Robert Spencer - August 28, 2017 - Editor's (Spencer) Note: Of course, it's legal! It's part of those pesky rights Muslims want to claim for themselves, but cry and whine about when Christians take the Gospel to those trapped in the lies of Islam. It appears legal because it is that. Even more, Christians are commanded and have a duty to share the Gospel with everyone (Matt. 28:19-20), not just Muslims. I'm sure anyone can agree that Muslims converting to Christianity is not only in their best interest but in the interest of Western society as well.
This Arab American News story is written as if the Christian preachers were spreading bubonic plague, and of course, for the Muslims interviewed for it, they might as well have been: Islamic law mandates death for those who leave the religion, and so from the Islamic perspective, these preachers were actively endangering the lives of those Muslims to whom they were preaching.
Nonetheless, it is not illegal in the United States to preach Christianity or any other religion. It is only illegal to preach Christianity under Islamic law. But perhaps unsure as to whether Dearborn was under the rule of the U.S. Constitution or Sharia, Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad checked with lawyers and got the bad news: “According to our corporation counsel, it appears to be legal to engage in the noted activities under the First Amendment in the park.”
At least he asked this time. A few years ago, Dearborn Police arrested some Christian evangelists for daring to try to preach to Muslims. But remember: if you’re concerned about the influence of Sharia in the U.S., you’re a racist, bigoted “Islamophobe.” http://freedomoutpost.com/dearborn-muslims-uproar-christian-proselytizing-police-chief-admits-appears-legal/

PEOPLE STAND NEXT TO FLOWERS, CANDLES AND OTHER ITEMS SET UP ON THE LAS RAMBLAS BOULEVARD IN BARCELONA AS THEY PAY TRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS OF THE BARCELONA ATTACK ON AUGUST 18, 2017
BARCELONA JEWS REJECT THEIR RABBI'S PREDICTIONS OF DOOM AFTER ATTACK
We are a vibrant community and we will not leave our city, says spokesman after Chief Rabbi Meir Bar-Hen warns they have no future
By TOI staff and JTA - August 18, 2017 - A spokesman for the Barcelona Jewish Community on Friday rejected predictions of doom from the local chief rabbi, vowing that the city’s Jews would not abandon the city in the wake of the deadly attack by Islamic terrorists. “Barcelona is a city where Jews have been living for one hundred years and of which they are proud. We Jews will not leave our city,” spokesman Victor Sorenssen said in an email to the Times of Israel.
His comments came after the Barcelona Chief Rabbi Meir Bar-Hen said he believes the Jewish community in Barcelona is “doomed,” because authorities in Spain do not want to confront radical Islam. Without mentioning Bar-Hen by name, Sorenssen said that the Jews of Barcelona had a vibrant past and a positive future and are an integral part of multi-cultural Barcelona.
“Since 1977, with the arrival of democracy, the Jewish community has played an active role in the social fabric of Barcelona. The Jewish community participates actively in social, cultural and religious life of the society and has relation with the institutions of the city, of Catalonia and Spain,” he said, noting that next year the community will celebrate it’s centenary after being reformed following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
“In these hundred years, Jews from all over the world have been an active part of this reconstruction,” said Sorenssen, who wrote that he had been asked to speak out on behalf of the “crisis committee of the Jewish community” in response to the terror attack. “We are living a revival of Jewish culture.”

HAMAS SUMMER CAMP TEACHES YOUTHS TO 'LIBERATE PALESTINE'
1,000 Gaza youngsters jump through fiery hoops, train with live fire for their graduation ceremony
By AFP - August 18, 2017 - Hamas held a closing ceremony in the Gaza Strip on Friday for a batch of the 120,000 boys and girls attending the Islamic terror group’s controversial summer schools. The ceremony, for some 1,000 students who took part in camps in the southern city of Khan Yunis, was framed as part of Hamas’s plan to continue its armed conflict with Israel. Boys between 15 and 18 years of age were put through military drills at the week-long camp, including shooting with live ammunition and training in scouting skills.
They also jumped through fiery hoops and went over obstacle courses. Hamas official Ashraf Abu Zayed said the training came within the framework of “preparing for the liberation of Palestine.” “We are trying to invest the younger generation and guide them towards the liberation project,” he told AFP, referring to armed struggle against Israel. Such camps in the enclave of two million people have been heavily criticised by rights groups concerned with young people’s welfare. Israel says they indoctrinate young people into Islamist Hamas’s terrorist ideology. Hamas and Israel have fought three wars since 2008, and Israel and Egypt maintain a blockade on the enclave aimed at preventing Hamas from bringing in arms and ammunition. http://www.timesofisrael.com/hamas-summer-camp-teaches-youths-to-liberate-palestine

CLAIMS CONFERENCE NEGOTIATING WITH GERMANY OVER HOLOCAUST REPARATIONS FOR ALGERIAN JEWRY
Although they were not forced into ghettos, Claims Conference says Berlin should compensate Algerian Jews for stripping citizenship and professions under Vichy regime
By Julie Masis - |August 24, 2017 - Retired insurance professional Robert Blum, now 91, was a 14-year-old high school student in the Algerian capital Algiers in the early 1940s when he was expelled from his school for being Jewish. Algeria, under the control of Vichy France at the time, was introducing a series of anti-Semitic laws which stripped Jews of their French citizenship, barred Jewish children from public schools, and prevented Jewish doctors, lawyers, pharmacists and other professionals from working in their trades.
Now the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, also known as the Claims Conference, is making the case to the German government that it should compensate Jews who were in Algeria at the time of the Shoah.
“It was obviously not like the camps in Poland, but it doesn’t mean that there wasn’t persecution — and on that basis we believe that people are entitled to compensation,” said Greg Schneider, the executive vice president of the Claims Conference. There were approximately 130,000 Jews in Algeria during World War II, and it is estimated that about 25,000 of them are still living — mostly in France, Schneider said. As far as Blum remembers, being kicked out of the government school wasn’t so bad — he just had to go to a different school nearby, where all the students and teachers were Jewish. The Jewish school was not far from the French school, so he could still spend time with his old schoolmates.
